Dallas Stars extend GM Jim Nill for two seasons

The Dallas Stars have extended general manager Jim Nill on a two-year contract through the 2025-26 season. When considering the Stars’ recent performance, this does not come as much of a surprise. Nill is currently the organization’s 11th general manager and will be entering his 11th season with the Dallas Stars.

Along with the above, the fact Nill recently won the Jim Gregory Award to cap this latest season only cements why this contract extension was an easy decision for the Stars (The Jim Gregory Award recognizes the top General Manager in the NHL).

Nill, who is 65, will now continue as the longest-serving general manager in Stars franchise history as the club continues to move forward seeking their first Stanley Cup since 1999.

During his tenure as GM, Nill and the Stars have fared quite well with an overall record of 403-280-98. Throughout that period of time, the Stars have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs on six separate occasions, two of which were conference finals appearances (2020, 2023). While the Club also reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 as well.

This past season Nill’s Stars managed to post 108 points in the regular season which was their highest total since the 2015-16 season. Not to mention the fact that they also reached the Western Conference final for their second appearance in the last four seasons, bowing out to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games.

The Stars are on the right track and close to achieving their championship dream largely thanks to a core of elite players drafted under Nill’s watch, including center Roope Hintz (2016) and the 2017 trio of defenseman Miro Heiskanen, goaltender Jake Oettinger and left winger Jason Robertson, not to mention breakout rookie Wyatt Johnston, selected in the 2021 NHL Draft.
