During a new conversation with Eric Smith of Chargers.com, freshly-hired Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Greg Roman reflected on the most important player in his new system: Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert.

"Thoroughly excited about working with Justin," Roman revealed. "It's a really exciting prospect to work with him. I remember his first game against the Chiefs a few years back and I remember we were playing the Chiefs the next week, so I got to watch his film. He played in that game and he wasn't expecting to. I remember saying to myself, 'Woah, does this guy have some ability?' I can see watching him play throughout the years, potential is enormous. He's a meticulous thinker, he's extremely smart, make any throw on the field, all that stuff. We're really looking forward to collaborating with him and doing something special here with the LA Chargers."

Roman has enjoyed a lengthy assistant coach career, first kicking off with the Carolina Panthers as the club's offensive line assistant in 1995. He landed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2017 as the team's senior offensive assistant and tight ends coach. He rose through the ranks until he was named Baltimore's offensive coordinator in 2019. For his efforts that first season, he was honored as the Associated Press' NFL Assistant Coach of the Year.

Herbert has a heck of an arm and all the tools to be a perennial superstar in this league, but he has yet to string together multiple consecutive playoff seasons.
