Jones — whom the Jacksonville Jaguars recently released — is drawing interest from multiple teams. Schultz added that the former second-round pick previously met with the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals.
Jones, a Dallas native, could become a solid No. 3 WR for the Cowboys and provide needed depth. Dallas failed to upgrade its receiving corps in the NFL Draft and the first wave of free agency.
The Cowboys released WR Michael Gallup in March. (He has since signed with the Las Vegas Raiders.) Former third-rounder Jalen Tolbert has yet to prove he's a consistent option, recording 24 receptions for 280 yards and two TD catches in his first two seasons.
Surprisingly, Dallas waited until the sixth round of the NFL Draft to take another pass-catcher, selecting Southeast Missouri State WR Ryan Flournoy (pick No. 216).
Last season, Jones dealt with a lingering knee injury, missing eight games. He finished with 34 receptions, 321 yards and two TD catches. He was far more productive in 2022, however, logging a career-high 82 receptions for 823 yards and five TD catches.
Jones's outside game would complement Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb. Per Pro Football Focus, in 2023, 71.1 percent of Jones' snaps came out wide, while 57 percent of Lamb's snaps came in the slot.
Considering the recent bull market on veteran wideouts, the Cowboys should act fast and sign Jones. Tyler Boyd (Tennessee Titans), D.J. Chark Jr. (Los Angeles Chargers), Chase Claypool (Buffalo Bills) and Odell Beckham Jr. (Miami Dolphins) have signed elsewhere.
